Notes and tips

New York Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire is out indefinitely with a bulging disk in his lower back. The team announced his status Monday after an MRI revealed the damage. Stoudemire is slated to undergo non-surgical treatment for the injury followed by rehabilitation, the Knicks said. Stoudemire was originally injured during the second half of Saturday's win against Detroit. The 29-year-old Stoudemire is averaging 17.6 points and 8.0 rebounds in his second season with the Knicks.

After Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love recorded at least 30 points and 20 rebounds for the third time in a game this season, oddsmakers started to take notice. Love, who leads the NBA averaging 30.9 points over the month of March has seen his odds drop from 25/1 last week at Sportsbook.com to 12/1 this week.

Suspended New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton has had discussions with former boss and mentor Bill Parcells about becoming the Saints’ interim coach, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported on Monday, citing league sources. Payton and Parcells have reportedly spoken on a couple of occasions since NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended the Saints coach for the year following his involvement in the team's bounty program. The two worked together with the Dallas Cowboys in 2003-05 - when Payton was the assistant head coach under Parcells. Payton's suspension will take effect on April 1, but reports also surfaced later Monday that Payton may be able to coach during an appeal process, if he chooses that route.

Dirk Nowitzki's right eye was proof of the intensity between the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets last weekend.Nowitzki needed four stitches to close a cut for the Mavericks, who defeated the Rockets for the fifth straight meeting as these teams get ready for Tuesday night's rematch in Dallas.Dallas (28-22) won 101-99 in overtime at Houston (27-23) on Saturday in the Mavericks' most recent game. The contest featured 17 lead changes, 15 ties, a rowdy Rockets crowd and an incident in which Nowitzki was elbowed in the face by Goran Dragic."I just had a few stitches and I'm not for sure how it happened but I think it was Dragic and it was really a huge play for us down the stretch," Nowitzki said. "I guess he elbowed me in the face and the ref was right on it, and called the offensive foul. And that was a big play in the game. I thought it was Dragic, but it is what it is."That was the first of three meetings this season between these Southwest Division teams involved in a tight race to reach the playoffs. The Mavericks are in fifth place in the Western Conference and the Rockets are tied with Utah and Denver for spots seven through nine."We're fighting now," Dallas guard Jason Terry said. "We're fighting every night we go out on the floor. Each game is very critical for us, as far as playoff positioning. It's been a tough season, but overall I like the effort of everybody. We're doing what we have to collectively as a group to have success."Nowitzki scored 31 points and Terry added 14 of his 24 after the third quarter in a game coach Rick Carlisle called the Mavs' "biggest win of the year." The Rockets had all five starters in double figures, with Dragic scoring 24 and Luis Scola adding 19.While Dallas hasn't played since, Houston comes to town after needing overtime to get past lowly Sacramento 113-106 at home on Monday. Patrick Patterson scored a career-high 24 as the Rockets rallied from a 16-point deficit."Patrick played great," coach Kevin McHale said. "That's the Patrick that we need to see all the time. He was just fantastic."Dragic left with about a minute left in overtime with an ankle injury and was helped to the locker room. Dragic said it is a "minor sprain" and that X-rays on it were negative.The point guard's absence forced Earl Boykins, signed earlier in the day to a 10-day contract, into the game to make four clutch free throws in the final 21 seconds. Boykins finished with 10 points and five assists in his first action of the season."This is definitely a unique situation, but when you've been around as long as I have, you know how to prepare to play in the NBA even when you're not in the NBA," Boykins said. "It takes a great deal of confidence to give someone the ball who you haven't seen all year (and be) confident that they can make free throws. 'Significant' money on overs

Kentucky is the biggest Final Four favorite in a long time, but that might not be enough to scare bettors away from the dominating Wildcats.Kentucky has settled as an 8.5-point favorite in Saturday’s semifinal against instate rival Louisville. That’s the biggest pointspread in a Final Four game since Duke was favored by 11 over Michigan State in the 1999 national semifinal.BetOnline.com first opened Kentucky as 9.5-point favorites shortly after the Wildcats jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead against Baylor. The number was quickly bet down to 8.5, where the Wynn, Lucky’s and the LVH SuperBook opened the game in Las Vegas. The offshore book 5dimes.com briefly had Kentucky -7.5, but was offering -9 as of Sunday night.“We had different opinions on the number,” said Jay Kornegay, director of the LVH SuperBook. “We respect Kentucky, but that’s a lot of points. It’s a little unusual for a Final Four game.”Kornegay briefly moved the Wildcats up to 9-point favorites Sunday, but said it was quickly brought back down to 8.5, where it sat as of 5 p.m. Vegas time.In the other national semifinal, Ohio State is a short favorite over Kansas. The Buckeyes opened up at -3 offshore, but the number had been bet down to -2.5 at most shops by Sunday night.The biggest movement came on the totals for each seminal. Kornegay posted 134.5 for the Kansas-Ohio State over/under, but immediately received what he called “significant money” on the over. The SuperBook was already up to 136.5 within an hour of opening.The total on Louisville-Kentucky also was on the rise at the LVH. It opened at 137.5 but had moved up to 138.5.“That may be just be them (sharp bettors) getting the number early, figuring the public is going to push the number up even more,” said Kornegay.Both games are rematches from earlier in the season. As 10-point favorites, Kentucky failed to cover in a 69-62 home win over Louisville win on Dec. 31. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 24 points and 19 rebounds in a physical game that featured 52 fouls.Kansas knocked off Ohio State, 78-67, on Dec. 10, in Lawrence. The Jayhawks started as small home dogs, but shortly before the game Buckeye big man Jared Sullinger was ruled out, and Kansas ended up closing as 1.5-point favorite.

Lorenzo Romar's Washington Huskies have parlayed a well-deserved NCAA Tournament snub into a National Invitation Tournament semifinal appearance opposite Minnesota at Madison Square Garden. A victory would put the Huskies into position to win their first-ever NIT championship. If they beat the Gophers, the Huskies will play the Stanford-Massachusetts victor.
Washington, winners of three straight after its Pac-12 Tournament ouster by Oregon State March 8, is 9-6 all-time against Minnesota, a No. 6 seed in the NIT, but the teams have not met since 1991, when the Huskies registered a 77-61 win at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.Minnesota (22-14) scored its biggest victory of the season Jan. 12, when the Gophers traveled to Bloomington, IN., and defeated the No. 8-ranked Hoosiers 77-74.The Gophers and Huskies played three common opponents in 2011-12. Minnesota routed South Dakota State 71-55 Nov. 14. A month later, the Jackrabbits, who became an NCAA Tournament team, blasted Washington 92-73 in one of the epic losses in UW basketball history.Minnesota also defeated Southern Cal 55-40 Dec. 3. UW posted two wins over the Trojans in Pac-12 play.Minnesota won its season (2-1) series with Northwestern, winning 75-52 Jan. 22, losing 64-53 Feb. 18 and winning again 75-68 in OT during the Big Ten Tournament. Washington shellacked Northwestern 76-55 in the second round of the NIT.Minnesota has an RPI of 63 after knocking off Middle Tennessee State in the NIT quarterfinals. Washington has a RPI of 50 after three straight NIT wins.
"Minnesota presents another tough challenge for us," Romar said. "They play really good hard-nosed defense. Tubby Smith is one of the best coaches around. A tough opponent like this is what you would expect to find in the final 4 of the NIT."
Minnesota is appearing in the NIT for the first time since 2003. Washington will be making its second visit to Madison Square Garden this season. In December, the Huskies lost to Marquette in the Jimmy V Classic and to Duke in the CARQUEST Auto Parts Classic.

SERIES: Dates to Dec. 27, 1939,
when the Huskies lost the first of three consecutive meetings to the Gophers, 47-41 in Seattle. Between 1950-59, the Huskies scored four consecutive wins over Minnesota. The teams last played Dec. 22, 1990, in a game in which UW's Mike Hayward scored 13 of his 20 points in the first half, leading the Huskies, coached by Lynn Nance, to a 72-61 win at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. Doug Meekins aided the UW cause with nine points and 11 rebounds.

LAST GAME (Washington, March 20):
Terrence Ross scored 24 points,Tony Wroten 22 and Washington held off a late rally from Pac-12 rival Oregon for a 90-86 victory. Ross made 9 of 18 shots and hit three 3-pointers after scoring a career-high 32 against Northwestern in the second round. Oregon had scored 108 points in its quarterfinal win over Iowa. Washington had its largest lead at 75-65 with 7:22 left, capping a 9-0 run.

LAST GAME (Minnesota, March 21):
Rodney Williams and Andre Hollinseach tallied 24 points to help Minnesota advance to the semifinals of the NIT with a 78-72 win over Middle Tennessee. Elliott Eliason added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Gophers, while Hollins also had six rebounds and four assists. Marcos Knight led Middle Tennessee (27-7) with 19 points and nine rebounds.

Washington IN THE NIT:
Washington is making its first appearance in the NIT since 1997 and its sixth overall. The Huskies also played in 1996, 1987, 1982 and 1980 and are 6-5 after defeating Oregon Tuesday. The Huskies have hosted five NIT games and are 4-1 in those contests.Prior to playing UT Arlington and Northwestern last week, UW last hosted an NIT game March 16, 1987, when the Huskies defeated Boise State 73-68 (UW lost in the third round to Nebraska at Lincoln). In that game, senior guard Greg Hill scored 18 of UW's 22 points in the final five minutes, including 15 in a row. COACHES:
Romar is in his 10th season as Washington’s head coach. Romar has taken the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament six times, and won three Pac-10 Tournament titles (2005, 2010, 2011). Romar, who signed a 10-year contract extension in April 2011, won his his 200th game at Washington Dec. 16, 2011, when the Huskies defeated UC Santa Barbara. He had his 300th career victory and his 100th as a conference coach when the Huskies won Jan. 21. Romar was selected the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the third time in his career.Romar played for the Huskies under head coach Marv Harshman during the 1979-80 seasons (served as team captain his senior year), and then had a five-year NBA career with Golden State (1981-84), Milwaukee (1984) and Detroit (1984-85). A losing season in Carolina doesn’t cause as much chaos as one in Toronto. Five wins in the last 23 games have the Maple Leafs' faithful calling for the head of general manager Brian Burke. The Hurricanes aren’t giving up hope, even though they are a whopping nine points out of a playoff spot with six games remaining. That optimism may have something to do with the fact that Carolina has won seven of its last 10 against Toronto.A loss to the Hurricanes will officially eliminate the Maple Leafs from playoff contention. If Toronto is going to stay alive for one more game, it is going to have to win somewhere where it hasn’t in the last nine tries. Rangers star goaltender Henrik Lundqvist isn’t happy with his current form and told the media he needs to start fine tuning his work between the pipes before the playoffs begin. Kobe Bryant is mired in a bit of a scoring slump, and the Los Angeles Lakers have had some trouble slowing down opponents.A game against the struggling Golden State Warriors could be the answer to both of those problems.Bryant and the Lakers look to continue their dominance over the Warriors Tuesday night at Oracle Arena.After winning eight of 10, Los Angeles has dropped three of five. The Lakers, who allow an average of 93.4 points and are one of the league's top rebounding teams at 45.5 per game, have given up at least 102 points in each of the last three defeats and have been outrebounded in the past two.In Sunday's 102-96 loss to Memphis, Los Angeles (30-19) allowed the Grizzlies to shoot 51.2 percent and score 52 points in the paint."We can't ignore what's going to make us a great team and what's going to make us a great team is playing defensively and playing solid at that end of the floor," forward Pau Gasol said. "Offensively, whether we play better or more confidently or not, we just have to be more consistent on the defensive end of the floor."The Lakers could have better success defensively against a Warriors team that is struggling to find its rhythm since trading Monta Ellis.Golden State (20-27) has dropped six of eight, averaging 92.7 points in those defeats. The Lakers are 21-4 when limiting opponents to 93 points or less. Gasol finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds Sunday, Andrew Bynum scored 30 on 11-of-16 shooting and Ramon Sessions added 18 points in his second start with the Lakers. Bryant also scored 18 with just two coming in the fourth quarter.Bryant didn't get as much playing time as usual down the stretch, however, as the 14-time All-Star spent nearly four minutes on the bench as the Lakers attempted to make a final push. He said he supported coach Mike Brown's decision."If you guys are looking for a story, I'm not going to give it to you," said Bryant, who averages a league-best 28.3 points. "I can't sit here and criticize his decisions. As the leader of this ball club, that's something I can't afford to do."Sunday's performance was the second straight 18-point effort from Bryant, who is averaging 22.0 points on 37.1 percent shooting in the last five games. He averaged 30.9 points in the previous 10 and has enjoyed similar success against Golden State.In the Lakers' lone matchup of the season with the Warriors on Jan. 6, Bryant had 39 points on 13-of-28 shooting in a 97-90 win. Los Angeles has won 13 of the last 14 meetings, and Bryant is averaging 28.4 points in 16 games against Golden State since 2007-08.The Warriors will likely be short-handed for this game with Stephen Curry nursing a right ankle sprain and Nate Robinson sidelined with a strained right hamstring. Rookie Charles Jenkins started for Robinson against Portland on Sunday and finished with a career-high 27 points, but he missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer in a 90-87 loss."It won't be Jenkins-sanity, but he is a guy that is more than capable of going out and doing the job," coach Mark Jackson said. "We're pleased with his progress."Rookie Klay Thompson has also done a solid job of stepping up in the wake of the Ellis trade, averaging 19.7 points in starting the last nine games.
