    Ice picks:
    Tuesday's best NHL bet$

    Phoenix Coyotes
    at Dallas Stars (-130, 5)

Tuesday will be a huge day in the Western Conference. Phoenix and Dallas square off tied with 83 points apiece, though Dallas currently occupies top spot in the Pacific division thanks to the club’s 39 wins. With as many as five teams battling for the final two playoff spots in the West, this might as well be a playoff game for both teams.Phoenix got late goals from Ray Whitney and Raffi Torres to crawl back from a 2-0 deficit with 12 minutes remaining in regulation on Sunday to down Edmonton 3-2 in a shootout."Every game matters so much for us right now," Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle told reporters. "We fumbled it around a bit in the first period, but I think we played our game more as the game wore on. We were able to work them down low and find a way to win."The Coyotes have won three straight meetings with Dallas and the Stars are struggling in their own end right now, having allowed nine goals in the last two games. Pick: Coyotes

    Calgary Flames
    at Colorado Avalanche (-135, 5)

The Calgary Flames’ playoff hopes are still flickering, but they have to stop giving away points in winnable games. Calgary lost its second straight contest Sunday, falling 2-1 in a shootout to Columbus after losing 3-1 at Edmonton on Friday. “We all know in this locker room that it’s unacceptable, especially at this time of the year, but the last thing you want to do right now is sit and dwell on it. We have to learn from what we did,” Flames winger Blake Comeau told reporters. Offense has been a problem for the Flames all season and even though they outshot Columbus 31-18, they couldn’t take advantage of their chances. Calgary also hasn’t scored a power play goal in five games. Colorado has picked up nine points over the last five games and is coming off an impressive 3-1 win over the Rangers. Pick: Under

    College fund$:
    Tuesday's best NIT bet$

    Massachusetts Minutemen
    at Drexel Dragons (-6.5, N/A)

Many believed the Dragons belonged in the NCAA tournament, but at least the NIT showed Drexel some love with three straight home games. The Dragons dropped Central Florida 81-56 on Wednesday and Northern Iowa 65-63 on Sunday. Drexel, which utilizes a seven-man rotation, is fifth in the nation in scoring defense at 55.7 points as Bruiser Flint continues the defense-first philosophy he installed at Massachusetts. The Dragons are also No. 4 in 3-point field goal defense (28.8 percent), but will be put to the test as Massachusetts is 23rd in scoring (76.8 points per game). The Minutemen upset No. 1 seed Temple 77-71 in the Atlantic 10 tournament before losing the next day to St. Bonaventure 84-80. Massachusetts has done it on the road in the NIT with victories over Mississippi State in double overtime on March 13 and Seton Hall on Saturday, but the Dragons will be tough to beat in their own den. Pick: Dragons

    Oregon Ducks
    at Washington Huskies (-4.5, N/A)

It’s been a down year for the Pac-12, but the conference is assured of having one team in the NIT semifinals with No. 3 seed Oregon visiting top-seeded Washington for the chance to play in New York’s Madison Square Garden. The rivals split the season series, with both teams winning at home. The Huskies cruised to a 76-60 win on Dec. 31, and Oregon beat Washington 82-57 on Feb. 9. The Huskies were openly rooting for a third game with the Ducks after routing Northwestern by 21 points last Friday. The Ducks have averaged 102 points in their first two NIT games, but they’ve also allowed an average of 86.5. Look for another high-scoring game against Washington, which averages 75.4 points. The Ducks had five players in double-figures for the second consecutive game against Iowa, and E.J. Singler led the way with 25 points. Singler, who recently became the 13th player in school history with over 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds, averaged 16.5 points and 8.5 boards in two games against Washington this season. Pick: Ducks

NHL: The over is 1-10 in Philadelphia’s last 11.
NHL: Phoenix has three wins in its last 10.

    Key stat 55.2 –
Drexel is allowing just 55.2 points per game in its last five but will be tested by UMass in Tuesday’s NIT quarterfinals. The Minutemen average 77.5 points per game this season, ranking 15th in the country.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked
Kendall Marshall, North Carolina Tar Heels -

Marshall underwent surgery Monday on his broken right wrist, leaving his status for Friday's NCAA regional semifinals against Ohio up in the air. Marshall broke a bone in his wrist Sunday during the top-seeded Tar Heels' 87-73 second-round win over Creighton. A screw was placed in the wrist during the procedure. Marshall, who suffered the injury to his non-shooting hand, had 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting and 11 assists Sunday, helping to send North Carolina to its record 25th Sweet 16 appearance.

    Game of the day
Los Angeles Clippers at Indiana Pacers (-3.5, 187.5)

    Notable quotable
"Defensively we didn't give them a lot of easy buckets. Tonight our defensive effort wasn't what it needed to be so we're going to have to pick that up a lot. They're very efficient offensively especially at home and we're going to have to try and get them under control a little bit." – Oregon coach Dana Altman after his club beat Iowa 108-97 to advance to the NIT quarterfinals Tuesday against Washington. It will be the third meeting of the season between the two teams, with both clubs securing comfortable home wins so far. The Ducks are set as 4.5-point road underdogs.

    Notes and tips

Most oddsmakers opened with a total of 203 or 204 points for Tuesday’s matchup between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Portland Trail Blazers, but that number had moved to as high as 206.5 by late Thursday evening. The over is 23-6 in Milwaukee’s last 29 overall.

New York Knicks point guard Baron Davis could return from a hamstring injury as early as Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Raptors. Davis tweaked his right hamstring in Friday’s opener of a home-and-home set with the Indiana Pacers and sat out Saturday’s second half in Indiana. However, the injury is not as bad as first suspected and the team is not taking any chances with the veteran guard. Jeremy Lin and Mike Bibby split time at point guard Saturday. Davis is averaging 4.8 points and 5.3 assists since returning to action from a back injury on Feb. 20.

Alexander Radulov may finally be returning to Music City. Radulov's Russian agent Yuri Nikolaev confirmed to Sovetsky Sport on Monday that "the matter has been resolved within the framework of the Kontinental Hockey League regulations. Alexander is leaving for Nashville." That information was confirmed by Yahoo! Sports, although TSN's Pierre LeBrun noted that Predators general manager David Poile texted him with the words "Still waiting". Radulov, who was the 15th overall pick by Nashville in the 2004 draft, has 25 goals and 38 assists with Ufa Salavat Yulayev of the KHL this season.

Boston Red Sox lefthander Jon Lester will once again be the team's Opening Day starter, manager Bobby Valentine announced on Monday. Lester was Boston's most dependable pitcher last season, going 15-9 with a 3.47 ERA and 182 strikeouts in 191 2/3 innings. The 28-year-old Lester will face reigning AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander when he squares off against the Detroit Tigers on April 13.

    Buckeyes emerge
    as 2nd favorite behind Kentucky

Second-seeded Ohio State has emerged as the second favorite to win the NCAA tournament, ahead of top seeds North Carolina, Michigan State and Syracuse.

The Buckeyes began the tournament at +800 (8/1) at the Las Vegas Hotel & Casino SuperBook, behind Kentucky +200 and North Carolina +600. But heading into the Sweet 16, Ohio State is +500, trailing only Kentucky (+180). North Carolina, despite point guard Kendall Marshall’s broken non-shooting wrist, held steady at +600 in the SuperBook’s updated odds. Marshall, according to multiple media reports, will have surgery today on his right wrist. He has not been officially ruled out of Friday’s game against Ohio.North Carolina State has made the biggest move of remaining teams. The Wolfpack started at 200/1 to win the tournament, but are now 60/1. That’s still the longest odds of anyone left, besides 13th-seed Ohio, which is in the Field at 75/1.Florida also has seen its odds receive a significant trim. The Gators began as 75/1 longshots, but are now 20/1, just behind Thursday's opponent Marquette (15/1).

Oklahoma City Thunder (34-11) at Utah Jazz (23-22)

    EnergySolutions Arena

The Utah Jazz have picked up the pace over the last few weeks to climb above .500 for the first time in over a month.Keeping things going, however, could prove difficult with the Western Conference-leading Oklahoma City Thunder coming to town.Seeking a fourth straight victory and sixth in a row at home, the Jazz try to avoid a three-game season sweep and a sixth consecutive loss to the Thunder on Tuesday night.Utah sat three games under .500 following a 5-13 stretch Jan. 25-Feb. 28, but has since gone 8-4 to pull within one-half game of Houston for the final playoff spot in the West. One night after defeating Golden State 99-92 in overtime for their fifth consecutive home win, the Jazz (23-22) picked up their third consecutive victory Sunday, 103-99 over the Los Angeles Lakers.Six players scored in double figures for Utah, which forced a season-high 24 turnovers and held the Lakers to 2-of-13 shooting from 3-point range."It's big for our team, big in our development and big in our growth," said Paul Millsap, who had 24 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals. "We just continue to push forward. I'm so proud of our young guys. They stepped up big for us. They came into a hostile environment and showed what we were capable of doing."With leading scorer and rebounder Al Jefferson away from the team to attend his grandmother's funeral over the weekend, Derrick Favors averaged 17.5 points and 13.5 boards while starting each of the last two games at center. Enes Kanter, selected No. 3 overall in June's draft, had a season-high 17 points Sunday."That's who we are," coach Tyrone Corbin said. "Right from the beginning of the year, we knew we had to play our young guys to get them some experience on the floor, to develop them with our veteran group of guys."Averaging 19.0 points and 9.4 rebounds, Jefferson is expected to return versus a Thunder team that's given the Jazz fits of late. Oklahoma City (34-11) has taken eight of 10 in the series, including five straight by an average of 15.0 points. The Thunder have shot a combined 51.0 percent from the field in winning 101-87 at Utah on Feb. 10 and 111-85 at home four days later.Oklahoma City, though, is enduring its worst stretch of the season by going 5-4 over its past nine games. The Thunder avoided dropping two in a row for the second time in 2011-12 with Sunday's 111-95 home win over Portland.Russell Westbrook scored 28 points while Kevin Durant added 26 for the Thunder, who outscored the Trail Blazers 31-15 in the first quarter and never looked back."We did a good job getting that good start," Westbrook, averaging 27.5 points during his last four visits to Utah, told the NBA's official website. "I liked our pace, we did a good job pushing the ball. We just have to stay focused."Oklahoma City shot a season-best 61.1 percent (11 of 18) from beyond the arc, improving to 12-0 when shooting at least 41.0 percent from long distance."I think passing (was key)," forward Nick Collison told the team's official website. "It starts with execution, if we can get an advantage, they have to help and that's when you can kick to open shooters."
Utah has outscored opponents by an average of 10.0 points and outrebounded them by 15.2 per game during its home winning streak. The Jazz haven't won six straight on their own court since a 10-game run Feb. 24-April 6, 2010.

Milwaukee Bucks (20-24) at Portland Trailblazers (21-24)

    Rose Garden

The surging Milwaukee Bucks haven't experienced much success against the Portland Trail Blazers in recent seasons.Newly acquired Monta Ellis could make all the difference. The Bucks look to extend their winning streak to six for the first time in more than two years Tuesday night against the Trail Blazers, who try to continue their recent domination in this series as interim coach Kaleb Canales makes his home debut.Milwaukee (20-24), sitting a half-game behind eighth-place New York in the Eastern Conference, bolstered its postseason chances Wednesday by sending injured Andrew Bogut and Stephen Jackson to Golden State in exchange for a package headlined by Ellis.Averaging 21.8 points, Ellis had 18 - one of six Bucks with at least 13 - in his debut as Milwaukee recorded its highest-scoring output of the season in Friday's 120-98 rout of the Warriors. Luc Richard Mbah a Moute scored a career-high 22 to go along with 17 rebounds."Coaches, everybody was phenomenal. I think it made it smooth for me," Ellis said."It's great man, it's even better to be out there on the floor with those guys sharing the ball. We've got a lot of guys who can hit shots and make plays ... I think we're going to get (in the playoffs) if we keep playing the way we did (Friday)."The Bucks, who haven't won six in a row since March 3-14, 2010, are averaging 112.8 points during their current run - well above their season mark of 97.5."We've had a (great) stretch here where we've scored the ball," coach Scott Skiles said. "One of the reasons we got Monta was to add another scorer out there late in the game."
Ellis has averaged 30.0 points on 53.4 percent shooting in his last four visits to the Rose Garden, and could prove to be a difference-maker for Milwaukee. The Bucks have dropped eight of nine to the Blazers, including five straight on the road by 12.6 points per contest.
Portland (21-24), which fired coach Nate McMillan on Thursday, returns home from a 2-5 road trip without two of its more notable players. The Blazers sent Marcus Camby to Houston and Gerald Wallace to New Jersey in separate deals before the deadline. After defeating NBA-leading Chicago 100-89 in its first game under Canales on Friday, Portland couldn't keep up with West-leading Oklahoma City in Sunday's 111-95 loss. Jamal Crawford scored 23 points while Raymond Felton had 19 and seven assists for the Blazers, who, despite the result, seemed to be pleased with their effort."We're just going to continue to fight," Felton told the team's official website. "I feel like we're going in the right direction. ... We lost tonight but they had to fight. They had to play hard to beat us. That's the way we want to play."The Blazers remain a handful of games out of the West playoff picture and could have a hard time making a move if LaMarcus Aldridge continues his subpar play. The All-Star has averaged just 17.0 points on 37.3 percent from the floor over the last four games - significantly lower than his season marks of 21.4 and 50.3.Aldridge has averaged 24.0 points on 65.6 percent shooting in his last four home meetings with Milwaukee. The Bucks haven't prevailed in Portland since a 100-93 win March 20, 2006.

    L.A. Lakers (28-17) at Houston Rockets (24-22)

    Toyota Center

The Los Angeles Lakers appear to have upgraded at point guard with one trade they made before last week's deadline, but may have disrupted team chemistry with another. The Houston Rockets were involved with one of those deals, and in no way did it help their immediate need for a point guard.Five days after their trade, the Pacific Division-leading Lakers try to bounce back from a loss when they visit the short-handed Rockets on Tuesday night.Los Angeles (28-17) acquired Ramon Sessions from Cleveland on Thursday for Luke Walton and Jason Kapono, and then sent Derek Fisher to Houston for backup big man Jordan Hill. Adding the speedy Sessions, who averaged 10.5 points and 5.2 assists with the Cavaliers, seems to be an improvement over the 37-year-old Fisher, who averaged 5.9 points and 3.3 assists. The trade, though, upset several Lakers veterans. Kobe Bryant, a teammate of Fisher's for 13 seasons, considered the five-time NBA champion an invaluable ingredient in the club's chemistry. The deal appeared to make sense for the Rockets (24-22), who only have one healthy point guard and could use a veteran to bolster a playoff push. Fisher, however, never reported to Houston and confirmed Sunday he reached a buyout agreement with the team. The Rockets are now forced to lean heavily on Goran Dragic at the point until Kyle Lowry returns from a bacterial infection. Lowry, averaging 15.9 points and 7.2 assists, is expected to be sidelined for at least another week. Dragic is averaging 16.0 points and 9.2 assists in six starts since Lowry became ill.The Lakers are coming off a 103-99 loss to Utah on Sunday that snapped a five-game winning streak. Andrew Bynum had 33 points and went 12 of 14 from the field while Pau Gasol scored 18, but Bryant suffered mightily to find his rhythm. He had 15 points and missed 17 of his 20 shots - his worst shooting performance since going 2 of 16 in a loss to Memphis on Dec. 20, 2004."The bottom line is, he's our guy," coach Mike Brown said. "The shots he took, I'd give it to him again. I don't know how many shots he missed near the rim - I mean, point-blank shots."Bryant, the league's leading scorer at 28.7 per game, had no trouble shooting in the Lakers' lone matchup with the Rockets, a 108-99 win Jan. 3. He scored 37 points and went 14 of 29, while Bynum had 21 points and 22 rebounds.Los Angeles is 10-2 in its last 12 against Houston, and Bryant has averaged 30.8 points in the last four meetings. The Rockets are coming off a 99-86 loss to Phoenix on Sunday, which allowed the Suns to move within one-half game of Houston for the final Western Conference playoff spot. Luis Scola had 18 points, Dragic scored 16 and Marcus Camby, acquired Thursday from Portland, had eight points and eight rebounds in his Rockets debut."It's always disappointing when you lose but we've just got to get home and get some practice under our belt with some new guys and go out and play," coach Kevin McHale said. Houston's offense was a bit stagnant Sunday and could have better luck against a Lakers team that has allowed 105.0 points over its last four road games. The Lakers are surrendering an average of 97.3 points on the road - 9.1 more than they give up at home.

Phoenix Suns (23-22) at Miami Heat (33-11)

    American Airlines Arena

By taking advantage of a portion of their schedule loaded with home games, the Phoenix Suns have crept into the Western Conference playoff picture.Their next 3 1/2 weeks are filled with road contests, and that stretch begins Tuesday night in one of the NBA's toughest arenas. The Suns try to extend their longest winning streak of the season to five games when they meet a Miami Heat team seeking its 14th straight home victory. With a 99-86 win over Houston on Sunday, Phoenix (23-22) moved over .500 for the first time and pulled within one-half game of the Rockets for the West's final playoff spot.Michael Redd had a season-high 25 points off the bench, Channing Frye scored 19 and Marcin Gortat added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Suns, who are 11-3 in their last 14 games."The chemistry is coming together," coach Alvin Gentry said. "I'm not sure how that happens and nobody can tell you how that happens. Guys are feeling pretty comfortable in their roles."The offense certainly seems to be coming together, as Phoenix is averaging 102.3 points in its last 14 games - 8.6 better than in its previous 17. Gortat is averaging 17.3 points on 59.3 percent shooting in the last 14 contests, while Jared Dudley is averaging 17.4 points in the past five."Every night there is someone else playing big minutes and having a big game," Gortat said.Although Phoenix has been one of the league's hottest teams over the last month, only two of its past 14 games have been on the road. It lost 115-104 in Oklahoma City on March 7 and beat the Los Angeles Clippers 91-87 at Staples Center on Thursday, snapping a four-game road losing streak. The Suns are about to become much more familiar with life on the road with 12 of their next 15 away from Phoenix."We're clicking, we're playing well," forward Grant Hill said. "We're feeling good and we've got to continue with that momentum now going east and playing against one of the best teams, in Miami."The Heat (33-11) are 19-2 at home and have reeled off 13 consecutive wins at AmericanAirlines Arena since a 91-82 loss to Milwaukee on Jan. 22. They haven't won 14 in a row at home since Jan. 22-March 16, 2007.Defense has helped keyed the surge, as Miami is allowing an average of 88.6 points during the home winning streak. The Heat shut down Orlando on Sunday, limiting the Magic to 39.5 percent shooting in a 91-81 win.
Dwyane Wade scored 14 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter, while LeBron James finished with 14 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and five steals."If I'm not getting it going scoring, it's time to focus on something else," said James, who was 4 of 14 from the field after combining for 64 points in his previous two games. "I try to be a complete basketball player."While James had trouble finding his shooting stroke, Chris Bosh finished with 23 points on 9 of 13 from the floor. The Heat improved to 15-2 when Bosh reaches the 20-point mark, and they're 17-7 when he scores 19 or fewer."He's the biggest piece of our team," James said. "And when he's going, we're very dangerous."Bosh, who averages 18.0 points, had no trouble offensively in Miami's two games against the Suns last season. He scored 35 - tied for his highest output with the Heat - in a 123-96 home win and 23 in a 95-83 victory in Phoenix.
This is the first meeting since James had 36 points in the win in Phoenix on Dec. 23, 2010. Dudley had a career-best 33 points in that game.
