    DAVE MALINSKY

    4* PITTSBURGH over WEST VIRGINIA

With an early market surge running West Virginia into double figures for this one it should come as absolutely no surprise that we are in play – in cashing both tickets behind Pittsburgh as road underdogs in January, and two of three against the Mountaineers as home favorites at the same time (the only loss being a bitter half-point ATS failure with Ohio State, which led by 15 on this court before finally falling by six), there are market biases that we can exploit. This is more of the same.

We have used the “Tough Out” moniker for Jamie Dixon and his Panthers so many times through the years that a long explanation would be redundant, but the short synopsis is that you have an outstanding tactician on the sidelines who has consistently recruited hard-nosed players, the kind needed to have success on the difficult Big East trail. That has led to a sparkling 20-9 ATS run as a conference road underdog since he took over the program, and note that in those seven seasons the Panthers are 6-4 straight-up when facing a Top 10 team on the road. This, from starting C Gary McGhee, sums up their attitude well heading into Morgantown - "We enjoy the experience. It's a hostile environment. It's pretty difficult to play there. The fans get loud. We play harder when the fans come at you. It gets you pumped up and your adrenaline going. It's something good for us." And with Jermaine Dixon returning after missing Sunday’s loss at South Florida (the Panthers are 7-1-1 ATS with him on the court since mid-December), the pieces are in place to make a serious challenge.

The West Virginia issues continue to be there – without a true PG or a true C this is a team loaded with talent that will be less than the seeming sum of its parts because of the awkward fit. They are particularly vulnerable against smaller and quicker teams, which is tonight’s matchup, and only their resiliency enabled them to overcome second-half deficits to escape with those close wins here vs. Ohio State, Louisville and Marquette, which came by a combined nine points. With just seven bench points in the last two games they are not going to wear this class of opponent down (Deniz Kilicli will make his debut tonight, but is not ready to be much of a factor yet), and 68.7 percent free throw shooting does not grow margins late.

    KEVIN ROGERS

    Warriors at Mavs
    Pick: Warriors +12

The Warriors continue their swing through Texas tonight, as Golden State battles Dallas. The Mavs continue to struggle covering numbers as home favorites, going 0-16 ATS the last 16 as 'chalk' at American Airlines Center. Dallas isn't play well recently, dropping three straight games. How bad has it been for the Mavs at home? Since an 18-point victory over the Rockets on November 10th, the Mavs' biggest home margin of victory has been seven points in the last 18 games in their backyard. Golden State did win at Dallas, 111-103 in late November, as the Warriors played with six players. Until the Mavs can prove they can beat teams convincingly at home, I'll fade them and take the Warriors tonight.

15 DIME - COLORADO BUFFALOES - Inflated number.

This Buffaloes team can play, and I do mean play.

Don't be fooled by their 11-10 mark for the year as they have battled some big boys early in the year such as Gonzaga, which they lost by 4 to, and Arizona by 4.

They have been very tough in Boulder to the tune of 10-1 SU with the only loss a 87-81 setback at the hands of Kansas State.

Just ask Baylor how tough the Buffaloes have been lately in their building. The Bears, arguably the hottest team in the Big 12 rolled into Boulder as a 3 point favorite and were sent home losers 78-71.

Kansas is off a sluggfest against Kansas State on national TV last Saturday night, and with Texas lurking 2 games away, covering this double digit number may be a bit too much.

The Jayhawks are back in the # 1 spot and along with that spot comes inflation with the pointspread. I will gladly take the inflation with the double digit home dog tonight.

    SPORTS WAGERS/RANDALL THE HANDLE

    Chicago +1.15 over PHILADELPHIA

The Bulls can be excused for a lackluster performance last night after returning home from a grueling trip that saw them play seven teams from the West in the span of 11 days. They won the last five games of that trip and were off for three days prior to last night’s game so it’s no surprise they were lethargic. Now they’ll take the road again and should be a whole lot sharper after playing last night and after a great trip against some very tough competition. This is a giant step down in class for the Bulls. Meanwhile, the 76ers offer very little as the chalk. They were tooth and nails to beat the Nets in New Jersey on Sunday and they have only registered seven wins at home in 23 tries. The Bulls are superior in every way and no way do they come up lame again after that poor performance last night. Play: Chicago +1.15 (Risking 2 units).

    Charlotte +9 over L.A. LAKERS

The worst thing about wagering against the Lakers, aside from their talent level is that if a player so much as breathes on Kobe a foul is called. However, the best part about wagering against the Lakers is that the line is always inflated and this is a prime example of that. The Lakers return home from an extremely tough trip that saw them play eight games in 11 nights. They played in New York and they played a big one in Boston on Sunday. They’ll now return home with no sense of urgency and there is very little chance of them being sharp for this one. We saw a very similar situation with the Bulls last night and although the Bulls aren’t the Lakers, the difficulty of this situation is almost exactly the same. As an eight-point choice last night the Bulls lost by eight to a slumping Clip Joint squad. What we all know is that the Bobcats are coming off a poor performance in Portland and that only enhances their focus for this one. They play tremendous defense, they’ll be completely jacked up and again, they catch the Lakers at the best possible time receiving close to double digits. Play: Charlotte +9 (Risking 2.06 units to win 2).

    Carolina +1.65 over CALGARY

Are the Flames in panic mode? Yeah, they are and the players that have been there for a while must be shaking their heads in disbelief while the Rangers and Leafs are secretly killing themselves laughing. Ales Kotalik and Christopher Higgins? Two complete stiffs that nobody wanted and one of them, Kotalik, has a big contract. Kotalik will now suit up for his fourth team in two years and he still has 2½ years remaining on his 3M a year contract. After dumping Phaneuf and Sjostrom, the holdovers reacted with a lifeless and unemotional performance against Philly in which they had maybe two scoring chances and 18 shots on net. They might react with even less emotion here after they let go of Olli Jokinen for two huge maybe’s. Darryl Sutter is probably hoping that the last few days were merely a dream and that he’ll wake up soon. It also doesn’t help that the local media is ripping apart the deals and the holdovers hear all that stuff and begin to believe it too. This Flames team is in a bad state of mind indeed. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes are playing solid hockey and they play hard every game. However, the bottom line here is the great take-back against a team in complete turmoil, panic and disarray. Play: Carolina +1.65 (Risking 2 units).
